The Wisdom of the Crowds

The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations, published in 2004, is a book written by James Surowiecki about the aggregation of information in groups, resulting in decisions that, he argues, are often better than could have been made by any single member of the group. The book presents numerous case studies and anecdotes to illustrate its argument, and touches on several fields, primarily economics and psychology.

Types of crowd wisdom

Surowiecki breaks down the advantages he sees in disorganized decisions into three main types, which he classifies as

  • Cognition

Thinking and information Processing

Market judgment, which he argues can be much faster, more reliable, and less subject to political forces than the deliberations of experts or expert committees.

  • Coordination

Coordination of behavior includes optimizing the utilization of a popular bar and not colliding in moving traffic flows. The book is replete with examples from experimental economics, but this section relies more on naturally occurring experiments such as pedestrians optimizing the pavement flow or the extent of crowding in popular restaurants. He examines how common understanding within a culture allows remarkably accurate judgments about specific reactions of other members of the culture.

  • Cooperation

How groups of people can form networks of trust without a central system controlling their behavior or directly enforcing their compliance. This section is especially pro free market.

Not all crowds (groups) are wise. Consider, for example, mobs or crazed investors in a stock market bubble. According to Surowiecki, these key criteria separate wise crowds from irrational ones:

Criteria

Description

Diversity of opinion

Each person should have private information even if it's just an eccentric interpretation of the known facts.

Independence

People's opinions aren't determined by the opinions of those around them.

Decentralization

People are able to specialize and draw on local knowledge.

Aggregation

Some mechanism exists for turning private judgments into a collective decision.

Based on Surowiecki’s book, Oinas-Kukkonen captures the wisdom of crowds approach with the following eight conjectures:

  1. It is possible to describe how people in a group think as a whole.
  2. In some cases, groups are remarkably intelligent and are often smarter than the smartest people in them.
  3. The three conditions for a group to be intelligent are diversity, independence, and decentralization.
  4. The best decisions are a product of disagreement and contest.
  5. Too much communication can make the group as a whole less intelligent.
  6. Information aggregation functionality is needed.
  7. The right information needs to be delivered to the right people in the right place, at the right time, and in the right way.
  8. There is no need to chase the expert.

Failures of crowd intelligence

Surowiecki studies situations (such as rational bubbles) in which the crowd produces very bad judgment, and argues that in these types of situations their cognition or cooperation failed because (in one way or another) the members of the crowd were too conscious of the opinions of others and began to emulate each other and conform rather than think differently. Although he gives experimental details of crowds collectively swayed by a persuasive speaker, he says that the main reason that groups of people intellectually conform is that the system for making decisions has a systematic flaw.

Summer Shopping- Blue

That's how I ended up my shopping day. I like those shoes a lot, so I did my best to find a good match for them. I think this dress and this bracelet are appopriate. I already have a belt, but I need a purse now. Another shopping day?

Summer Time

I love the summer, I wish I could spend three months by the seaside enjoying the season. Unfortunately, I can’t do that, I’m a working girl and I spend most of it in the office, watching beautiful landscapes on my desktop.

But I have the weekends and I find my way to take advantage of the summer time. Yesterday my friends and me went to a nice spa hotel in the suburbs and we spent the whole day on its outdoor pool. It wasn’t like a beach, but it was fun after all.

The Job Interview

We never have a second chance to make a first impression. It’s very important to know on a job interview, we have just a few minutes to show we deserve the job we apply for. It may be stressful and sometimes we may say things we don’t think, or we get confused and worried. What is worth is never easy.

Here are some things that may help:

Be nice and polite. The people who will be on the other side are humans too and they want you to join their team. Be patient if they are late or not completely aware of your CV, say you appreciate their time, wish them a nice afternoon/weekend.

Be aware where do you apply. We apply for companies and positions we’re interested in, but we should go any further once invited on an interview. Read the company website, the job requirements and opportunities and think about how does the job match your knowledge, experience and goals.

Show desire to learn. Every company has its own policy and systems and jobs there require a specific trainings. So tell them what you know why do you believe it will be useful for them and never forget to mention you are ready to learn everything that the job takes. People who don’t learn all the time are less likely to grow a successful career. Be flexible and easy going.

Never complain. Why did u leave your previous job is a normal question on a job interview. Don’t focus on the weak points of your career past, but on the positives of your future one. Don’t say what you didn’t like in your previous job, because people who are used to complain and mourn , they will always do, no matter where they are. Saying that you set up higher goals and being desired to meet new challenges, it sounds better.

Listen and understand. Listen to what they say and ask minor questions in order to show understanding of what you hear. Ask what they can offer, if you are not interested in their conditions that can make a bad impression- you are needy and you will agree on whatever they say, you are not confident and you don’t think you deserve any benefits or you are not interested in their offer any more.

And never feel disappointed if it doesn’t work out. Sometimes it just wasn’t your place to be. Believe something better is out there for you!

Don’t try to win their game, make your own one.

People tend to know everything, how does one or another thing work. They gain information and coordinate their actions based on it- what is good, what is bad, what is appropriate and what is unacceptable. In another words everyone needs to know the rules of the game and how to play it. In the business it’s a good beginner strategy to learn from others until you gain enough information.

Following the rules is a good start in the career competition. But at some point it happens that everyone who follows the rules is just average. Everyone can follow instructions. Then what? Make something more than that- be initiative, make a new game! Improve it, create a new approach, break the rules and see what’s beyond. See the big picture and then your work into it and many ideas may come up. Be careful and make sure your bright idea will enlighten your work but not put it in the dark.

Be brave, crazy ideas at first changed the world later.

My Busy April- China

Just three days after my weekend in Milan, I had to leave for China. I’ve preparing for this trip for months. I had to help a friend of mine who trades Chinese merchandises in Bulgaria. He needed my English knowledge and assistance to visit the Import-Export fair in Guangzhou.
I had eight hours in
Hong Kong and I took advantage of this situation to walk around. It’s very interesting place and I’m sorry I couldn’t spend more time there.
Guangzhou
is a nice place too- big crowded city, traffic, malls. But it also has beautiful parks. I was in three of their temples, very impressive experience. They have great shopping there, you can find everything from brand clothes, purses and watches to every type of gismos possible. The food was unusual for me.
I had to work a lot, but I’m proud I did a great job and it was an interesting experience for me to get involved in international sells process.

My Busy April- Milan

I’ve been really busy lately, but April was crazy, I can’t believe it’s over and I have everything that had been scheduled done.

I had three exams to take that included a lot of home assignments and three presentations, I’ve been working full time meanwhile. There were nights I couldn’t afford sleeping more than 4 hours. Surprisingly I got excellent marks on the tree of them. The subjects were very interesting to me and I enjoyed studying them and doing my “homeworks”.

I had a birthday, time is flying by so fast, I wish I could stay 25 for longer, but time is one of the irreversible things in this life. As I was too busy studying I didn’t celebrate, I just had a quite dinner with my best friend in a very nice Indian restaurant. It’s one of my favorites. But I have compensated a few days later, I went to Milan to celebrate my friend’s birthday.

Weather was amazing, unusually hot for spring- 34 degrees Celsius, but it gave me the chance to see the beautiful Italian lakes between the mountains from the plane. The view was beautiful! I saw some beautiful Milan streets, the Opera House and the impressive Duomo Cathedral, Piazza Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and one of the best Milan attractions- the gelato factory!

In the evening we had dinner in an outdoor restaurant in Porta Garibaldi area. Mmmm the food was so tasty! Then we went to a bar to get ready for the club. Italians are so funny people! We had a great time!

Later I was in China, then I visited my relatives for Easter.... but about that later :).

View from the plane

Very pleasant place for lunch

Same-sex Relationships for Girls

Some say being in love with someone you sex is just going against the laws of nature. But how many people really feel this way?

It’s not nowday’s invention. The first historical mention of the performance of same-sex marriages occurred during the early Roman Empire.

The word lesbian comes from the Greek Island of Lesbos, where the poet Sappho lived in 600 B.C. Sappho was an intellectual and poet who wrote many love poems to other women.

Today same-sex marriage is legal in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden. In Mexico, same-sex marriages are only performed in Mexico City, but these marriages must be recognized by all Mexican states. Israel does not recognize same-sex marriages performed on its territory, but recognizes same-sex marriages performed in foreign jurisdictions. In the United States, although same-sex marriages are not recognized federally, same-sex couples can marry in five states and one district (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and the District of Columbia) and receive state-level benefits.

Society and religions have hindered the 10% of the population seeking same-gender relationships- it's not fair to limit their happiness, isn’t religions based on love and happiness? Plus some religions allow one to have more than one supposes. Isn’t that against the main law of love- it’s just for two?

Psychologist John Buss estimates that for most of human history, perhaps 2% of women have been lesbian or bisexual (see note 1, below). Not any more. Recent surveys of teenage girls and young women find that roughly 15% of young females today self-identify as lesbian or bisexual, compared with about 5% of young males who identify as gay or bisexual. How come girls make this choice?

It starts mostly in the teenage. If a teenage girl kisses another teenage girl, for whatever reason, and she finds that she likes it - then things can happen, and things can change. If a young woman finds her soulmate, and her soulmate happens to be female, then she may begin to experience feelings she's never felt before. Especially if all the guys she knows are losers.

A girl in a same-sex relationship, who used to be strait shares: "It was just such a welcome change, to snuggle under a blanket on the couch with my girlfriend, watch a movie, and talk about God and death and growing old, to be intimate emotionally and spiritually as well as physically. I don't know a guy who could even comprehend the conversations we have." Maybe a straight woman is just a woman who hasn't yet met - the right woman? That sounds bothering. Is it getting harder for men and women to understand and please each other? If we connect this fact to the fact that around 50% of the traditional marriages end up with divorce in the US?

There are lots of forms discussing advantages and disadvantages of lesbian relationships and most of the posts are very positive. Here are the advantages people say:

“Guys usually don't have a problem with it and find it hot.” Sometimes girls start lesbian flirt to attract boys’ attention. It happens that after that she focuses her attention to the girl.

“You don't have to worry about getting pregnant.”

“There are more ways to have sex and pleasure”. “women tend to want a real long lasting relationship unlike some men, the kisses feeling soft and tender- being on the same wavelength and knowledgeable about the female body.”

“People are people no matter what sex and emotions and everything else still come into play. It’s really just your personal preference what you are into. But relationships will always be the same whether is straight, gay, or lesbian.”

No Men Allowed, Time For Girls

My sister had a birthday a month ago. She's the big girl who will always be my little sister. We celebrated in a club and we were girls only. Lately we perefr going out witout boys, I don't know the exact reason, but my friends say it's btetter. That night we had a lot of fun.

It wasn't an easy job for me to find a good present for my sis. She's shopping all the time and for me it looks like she has more than enough of everything. So I invited her to a SPA weekend far away from Sofia and ofcourse - girls only.
It was amazing- 6 girls, nice hotel, massages, swimming pool, sauna, cocktails and silly chats all the time- about men, about shoes, make-up, feminish jokes... all those things girls can ejoy only when there are no men around.

On our way back home we visited some small Bulgarian towns that keep their traditional vision and style. It was so nice to walk on the small streets between old-fashioned houses, eat traditional food and try home made wine.

We had a great time and we definitely plan to do it more often from now on.
